What does a smile do for you?

A person holding a paper with a smile written on it.

Have you ever walked down the street or through a mall and just felt good? It would be just something about the day, or maybe something good that happened to you, that is making you smile. Why are so many opposed to sharing a smile?

It is a scientific fact that when a person smiles, the brain releases a cascade of feel- good neurotransmitters, including dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin. These chemicals work together to reduce stress levels and alleviate pain, and to create a sense of well-being (Mingus, 2024).

When your students come into the classroom, do you greet them with a smile to start the day? Or do you greet them with an exhausted sigh and just get right into the work of the day?... One greeting can set the day off on a positive note, while the other can lead to complaining and exhaustion before the day even begins. Since our students look to their instructors for guidance at the beginning of their journeys, why not set them off in a positive direction? Instructors can show their students how to embrace the day with positivity and provide them with the knowledge and tools on how to overcome the adversities that will come their way.

Working in healthcare is very rewarding; there is nothing like being a part of something bigger than yourself. With the rewards come the spoils. There will be bad days, there will be times when others are not nice and need others to be just as miserable as they are. But as instructors, we can help show our students that there is no need to spread negativity. If we greet our students at the beginning of their day with a simple smile and a Good Morning, this small, seemingly insignificant act can have a much bigger, deeper impact than people realize.
